About Us
MISSION & APPROACH
Mission Statement: Supporting grassroots discussion, coordination, and collaboration to protect environmental and public health by helping accelerate characterization, control, and remediation of contaminated sites and plumes attributable to historical use of PFAS-containing firefighting chemicals.
Formed in 2023, the Hyannis PFAS Community Working Group (HPCWG) brings together citizens, officials, and organizations concerned about environmental and human health risks associated with uncontrolled PFAS plumes emanating from contaminated sites at the former Barnstable County Municipal Fire Training Academy and Cape Cod Gateway Airport.
To accelerate PFAS cleanup, HPCWG's goals are to:
· Improve understanding of the source and extent of contamination in Barnstable and Yarmouth
· Build awareness of exposures, health risks, protective measures, and control and remediation activities
· Represent community interests and inform citizen advocacy and official decision-making
Based on grant funds and donations, HPCWG members are advised by a licensed site professional (LSP) who evaluates PFAS site monitoring and plume modeling reports, participates in technical review processes and meetings, and guides community-based PFAS sampling and analysis. HPCWG members meet regularly, plan advocacy and outreach, host public information sessions and webcasts, and provide updates and comments through the media and to public officials.
